Reiki Degrees Explained

There are 3 degrees or levels of Reiki, each one a learning stage of it's own in which the Reiki student is attuned,or initiated,to the next level of energy and receives training in it's application and effects.

Attunements are carried out by a Reiki Master and involve a process of activating the Reiki energy (to the appropriate level) within the student.  The experience of attunements is very special and personal for both the student and the Reiki Master.

Whether you are a potential client or student of Reiki you will find a brief outline as to the differences between each level on this page.

Reiki 1

The first degree, or level, of Reiki is where the student learns about the history and principles of Reiki and becomes aware of working with and sensing energy.  I call this level Opening the Channel.

Vital tuition is given at this level that covers the student's intention and motivation for the responsibility of acquiring the label of "healer".

The first attunement is received and the student is trained in the hand positions for treating others and (most importantly in my opinion) the hand positions for, and necessity of, self healing.

Students qualified at Reiki 1 level are able to provide full Reiki treatments for family and friends.  By UK Reiki Federation standards it is not usually appropriate to charge for treatments until Reiki 2 practitioner level has been acheived.  However, this is debatable and an area for further discussion.

Reiki 2

The 2nd degree, or level, of Reiki introduces the student to the concepts of distance healing and involves the teaching of the sacred Reiki symbols appropriate to the level.  I call this level Removing Barriers.

During the teachings of this level and the subsequent attunement the student's healing channel is enhanced and the Reiki energy further unfolds and increases.  It is at this level of training that a student may become more psychically, spiritually and self-aware and that their Reiki practice may feel more guided or inspired.

All Reiki levels are transformational for the student, however Reiki 2 in my opinion and experience so far seems to alert the student to any residual negative emotions or thought patterns that may be restricting them.

Once qualified in Reiki 2 the student is generally known as a Reiki Practitioner. It is usually at practitioner level that Reiki treatments can then be charged for, insurance obtained and a private Reiki practice be built.

Reiki 3

The 3rd degree, or level, of Reiki is the Master/Teacher training and attunement.  At this level the student receives the Master attunement, is given access to the sacred Master symbols of Reiki and is trained in attuning and teaching others at all Reiki levels.  I call this level Paying it Forward

The title of Master/Teacher is perhaps misleading in that it assumes no further progress is necessary.  However, in my opinion, a Reiki Master/Teacher continues to be a student of Reiki and part of the role indeed is to continue to learn and grow in their practice of the healing arts, the active living of the 5 Reiki principles, and the responsibility the label of Reiki Master/Teacher brings.
